Top 10: Get Hype For Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9 is a classic Japanese side-scrolling action game from the same guys who brought you Mega Man. This time you play as Beck in a game that is very much reminiscent of that title, as if it was brought into the modern world of gaming. Today TGN is bringing you our top 10 reasons to be excited for Mighty No. 9.

This was one of the first big Kickstarters that was successfully funded, and it paved the way to many other titles. They raised almost 4 million dollars, and successfully hit all of their stretch goals, so this game is coming out quite soon, with a release date of September 15th. Let’s kick this top 10 list off with a bang!

Top 10: Reasons To Be Excited For Mighty No 9

10. Mighty No. 9’s Story

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve always liked when games have a certain narrative to them. A nice side-scroller with solid controls is enough incentive for me to play. Throwing in having an actual story to justify why I’m jumping around and shooting all of these guys is just the icing on top of the cake. This is why the story starts in at number 10 on this top 10 list.

Mighty No. 9 is fully voiced as well. The main character, Beck, is an android, and the ninth in a set of robots called the Mighty numbers. At some point, all these robots are infected with a virus, and it’s up to you to fight them and discover who’s behind this attack.

9. Not Exclusive

Mighty No. 9 is coming out on everything, and that’s an important subject on a top 10 list. If you’re a gamer of any kind, you have a platform that will support this game. This baby’s coming out on PC Windows, Linux, Mac, as well as Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and WiiU, on its initial release date. It’s also coming out for mobile platforms like the Vita and the 3DS, but at a later date. This is because they cannot simply port Mighty No. 9, and the developers have mentioned the need for redesigning a lot of stuff.

8. Art Style

What kind of top 10 would this be without mentioning the art? The art style looks very modern and at the same time, very faithful to the classic Mega Man. A lot of dedicated work was put into designing all the levels, characters, and animation styles in Mighty No. 9. It does have that cartoonish feeling that is very close to Nintendo’s characteristic look, and that’s quite the compliment.

7. The Dash Mechanic

In Mighty No. 9 it’s all about the dash. Even though they’re developing the spiritual successor to Mega Man, they’re also adding in a new fundamental mechanic: the dash. Dashing allows you to move faster and reach further with your jumps, but it’s also a way to take down your enemies. After shooting them for a while, your enemies change color, and that’s when you should dash them to eliminate them.

On top of that, you can do combos by dashing through multiple enemies in quick succession, which makes this apparently simple mechanic something that looks fun to master. It definitely deserved a spot on this top 10 list.

6. Mighty No. 9’s Characters

There are so many unique characters being developed. I’m not just talking about main story characters or the bosses. I’m also talking about every enemy you see throughout the different levels. Not only do they each have their own different designs and animations, the way they attack, and the way you’ll be taking them down, will be fundamental to determining how you take on the different stages. It’s this level of variety that this game requires to stay fresh and fun after hours of gameplay. That’s definitely a top 10 reason to get hype for this game.

5. Stealing Abilities

Like the original Mega Man, Beck is also able to steal abilities from the enemies he defeats, but it’s not just limited to the bosses you encounter. Regular enemies can also give you certain buffs, like increasing movement speed or getting bigger bullets. You do this by dashing through a stunned enemy.

You can see which kind of buff you’ll get based on the color of the stunned enemy. They’re all on a timer which can be seen on top of your character’s head, but if you’re good enough in dashing through the level, I’m sure you’ll be refreshing those buffs on a regular basis.

4. Twelve Stages

There will be a total of twelve stages to enjoy. That doesn’t sound like much, but Mighty No. 9 is also not built to only be played once (we’ll touch on replayability in a moment). These twelve stages are uniquely built and tailored to improve your abilities over time. They all also have unique designs and platforming challenges, as well as the occasional surprise that will test your skill. We here at TGN wish there were a few more levels, so this only comes in at number 4 on our top 10.

3. Eight Bosses

As I mentioned earlier, you’re the Mighty No. 9, which means there are eight other robots for you to defeat. Each one of these is a unique boss fight, with attack patterns and mechanics very distinct from one another. When you shoot them, their health depletes, but unless you dash them at the right time, they’ll regenerate their health back. This makes these encounters a bit more difficult, since getting in close isn’t always the best option.

Of course, you’ll be able to steal their abilities once you defeat them. Some of these will actually be required to beat certain levels of the single player campaign, others just give you that slight edge over your enemies.

2. Replayability

Even though there are only twelve stages, I can see all of you trophy hunters trying to do perfect runs on every single one of them. When you stun an enemy, you should dash through it as soon as possible. Doing so will give you more points, and you can see the numbers 100% popping out of the enemy, which should tell you that you did a perfect job. Now do that again for all the enemies throughout the level!

Dash through multiple enemies in a short period of time, without taking damage, to create combos, and reach the ultimate high score for glory and bragging rights. This immense amount of replayable content in this game deserves the number two spot on this top 10.

1. Game Modes

Coming in at number one of this top 10 list is the amount of game modes they have for players! Many of the Mighty No. 9 stretch goals on Kickstarter were different game modes. Since all of these goals were hit, there are now a ton of awesome Game Modes. These are here to increase your playable time even more, and they even bring this single player experience to the online world.

  • New Game Plus allows you to keep all your abilities from your first playthrough, and you get to play enhanced, more difficult versions of the same levels for an increased challenge.
  • Boss Rush Mode allows you to fight all the bosses without having to go through all the levels again, trying to beat them as fast as possible.
  • Turbo Mode is perfect for speedrunners. Get through the game as swiftly as you can and post your time online.
  • Challenge Mode, which remixes all the levels and enemies to create dozens of mini-missions that you can use to test your skills. This challenge mode can be played solo or with a friend in Co-op.
  • Online Battle Race Mode, the last stretch goal of the campaign, where you and a friend compete online, racing to the end of customized versions of the single-player stages. You can’t really shoot each other, but enemies you defeat will be sent to your opponent’s game to impede his progress.
