TGN Focus – 5 Simple Tips to Get More YouTube Views

One of the most common questions we hear at TGN is: “How do I get more views?”  Honestly guys, I could write a book about it – but we all know that would take away too much time from climbing the ladder on our favourite MOBA, or racking up the kills in COD.  I mean, I love you guys, but He Bo has been calling my name from my Smite account a lot lately.

In a nutshell, what are the things that we would recommend at TGN to get more views?  Let’s put it into a top 5, shall we?

“The more chances you have to draw

people to your channel, the better…”

5.  Be Good – Embed

Ah yes, the simple task that seems to elude most YouTubers.  Do you remember the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words?”  Imagine how much a video is worth on your blog or discussion article.  That’s a lot of words my friends, and it’ll get people geared to jump to your channel if they like your content.  The more chances you have to draw people to your channel, the better, and embedding does a lot to take hold of your readership and turn them into viewership.

The only reason that this isn’t higher on the list – not everyone’s a blogger!

4.  Comment on Comments in the Comments Section

At first, most channels won’t get a whole lot of engagement in the comment section.  That makes it SUPER important to engage with the initial commenters to set a kind of precedent.  The more you comment and create an atmosphere of conversation, the more likely new viewers will be leave a comment and feed the fire.  Keep up with it if you can and build your chatter.  You represent your channel, and people genuinely want to engage with you if they like your content.  The changes to Google+ commenting might even allow for collaboration opportunities you wouldn’t have otherwise encountered.

“…the thumbnails to your videos are key to

getting the most out of each upload.”

3.  Sticking Out Your Thumb(nail)

I’ve worked as a copywriter for years now, so you can imagine just how attached I am to the written word – but visuals play a massive role in grabbing the attention of your demographic as well.  Just like the artwork in your favourite ads, the thumbnails to your videos are key to getting the most out of each upload.  What are the elements of a good thumbnail?

a) Put a face (your face) in there if possible

b) Make sure the image is clear and bright

c) Keep it topical with the content of the video (no scantily-clad women!)

2.  Titillating Titles for a Total Treat

I like to treat every video and every article as a book that I spent years writing.  I mull over my titles like nobody’s business because a title is the first thing that your potential viewers are going to see.  Would you rather play “The Sims” or “Watch People Live in the Digital House you Built”?  These first few words are crucial to the success of your upload.  Here are some things to watch for:

a) Keep your title relevant to your content

b) Tie it in with your keywords (see below)

c) The shorter the better

Think seriously about what you would click on as a viewer, and try to implement that into your title.  Accentuate your video’s best feature!  A highlight, a goofy moment, or an interesting bit of content.

“The best way to optimize your searchability is to

optimize your keywords, so at TGN we try to…”

1.  Unlock Success with Keywords

Keywords and tags are a bit of a lost art, and they can really separate good YouTubers from great ones.  Luckily, here at TGN we have access to VISO Catalyst to optimize our keywords for us – but not everyone has this functionality.  Keywords are essentially what search engines latch onto (along with other things like descriptions and titles) when someone starts a search.  The best way to optimize your searchability is to optimize your keywords, so at TGN we try to…

a) Tie our keywords into our titles

b) Tie our keywords into our content directly

c) Watch out for keywords that people might be searching for RIGHT NOW and throw those into the mix if they relate to our videos.

All in all, everything that I’ve mentioned should be pretty easy to put into your day-to-day activities.  Put these to good use along with your promotions and chances are you’ll see growth in no time!
