We were lucky enough to get to sit down with him and ask him some questions about his channel, so get ready to learn a little about the man behind the epic simulator gameplay – DevilDogGamer!
Q. For gamers out there that are not already familiar with your content, what is your channel all about? Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A. Well I am the DevilDogGamer, real name top secret *cough stalkers*. I’m 27 years old and I am a former United States Marine. I served in Iraq as a Designated Marksmen with the 3rd Light Armor Reconnaissance Battalion.
Q. What is the video you created, that you are most proud of? Why?
A. I honestly cannot settle on one. There are so many that I still go back to and watch I feel at least every video has at least one moment in it that I am proud of.
Q. What is your favorite video game of all time? Why?
A. Digital Combat Simulator – I have never felt so drawn in and immersed into a game and I literally lose myself in it.
Q. What’s your favorite YouTube trending video right now?
A. I’m not really sure, I know its probably a funny thing to say but I really spend 0 time on YouTube outside of comment boxes. I rarely watch anyone else’s content.
Q. How did you get started on YouTube? What was your inspiration for starting a channel?
A. Well it just started as me getting bored one day and I decided to do a commentary about my experiences in the Marine Corps. Few months later I started getting popular and then when DayZ hit I was one of the first people to play it and blew up.
Q. What is your favorite video capture program? Audio capture?
A. Definitely Dxtory, Its a must if you do PC gaming content that with Virtual Audio Cable which can be a pain in the ass. I experiment with a bunch of different programs and I have always found those two to be the best.
Q. If you were to become an video game character for a day, who would it be? Why? What would you do?
A. Solid Snake for sure, Nothing like hiding in a box while snapping necks lol.
Q. Walk us through your typical work day. How do you allocate your time between playing games, video creation and building your community?
A. The most shocking thing for my fans is I actually have a family. So I have to juggle recording and editing daily content along with livestreaming twice a week in a 8 hour 5 day a week window. Which is extremely hard but somehow I manage to pull it off.
Q. What is your greatest YOLO moment?
A. Oh god pretty much a daily thing for me I cannot even find one that sticks out. I’m pretty aggressive in any game I play so I’m YOLO constantly.
Q. For aspiring gaming YouTubers, what is your best advice for success? What are the top things to avoid doing?
A. Don’t let your fans control your channel, Play the games and do the things that make you happy and if they don’t like it, too bad. You can quickly find yourself stuck playing the same game for years that you don’t enjoy anymore just to make your fans happy and that is when YouTube loses its fun.
Q. Any shout outs for your community?
A. Yup gearupgaming.com the place where you can usually find me.
Q. How do you choose which games to play on your channel? Do you go more for what’s trending or do you stick to games you love to play?
A. I give everything a chance regardless of its popularity. If I enjoy it then it goes up. My channel is driven by what I enjoy, not what’s popular.
Q. We see you’ve been playing a lot of ARMA 3 on your channel! Do you have a favorite mod?
A. City Life 3 is fun but mainly I enjoy the A.L.I.V.E. mod as it starts to bring realism to ARMA 3.
Q. ARMA 3 really goes above and beyond when it comes to combat simulation. How do you feel it stands up?
A. I’m actually disappointed in ARMA 3! I felt it didn’t live up to expectations and as a Battlefield Simulator I think it fell short big time. My heart still belongs to ARMA 2. It’s as close as you can get to actual war.
Q. Is there a place in ARMA 3 that you would really like to visit, or have already visited?
A. I would love to see a suburban America map I think that would be interesting.
Q. ARMA 3 with the Occulus Rift: Yes or no?
A. I’m currently working on that but the 3rd party software is a pain.
Q. Which ARMA 3 episode left the biggest mark on you?
A. Definitely the A.L.I.V.E. series, as A.L.I.V.E. brings something I felt was missing from ARMA 3, so I definitely feel without it ARMA 3 is bland.
Q. But this interview isn’t all about ARMA 3 now is it. You’re also playing several other games over on your awesome channel, including the interesting iRacing (a racing MMO) on Oculus Rift. How are you liking that Oculus Rift?
A. I actually don’t like the Oculus Rift and I try to tell everyone to stay away from it until they get the technology right. Its a miracle to get a game to work on it and when you do its a blurry pixelated mess. Definitely not all its cracked up to be.
Q. What racing wheel do you use to race online?
A. I use the Logitech G27 if you’re into racing games its definitely worth the buy.
Q. How do you like the combination of the Oculus Rift and the racing wheel? How realistic does it feel?
A. With a steering wheel/Oculus Rift combo its definitely a realistic experience. I feel that the Oculus really shows itself in racing games and flight sims at the moment.
Q. Do you have a favorite car? Either in iRacing or IRL?
A. Nissan GTR one day I will own it mark my words!
Q. You seem to be very into simulators, or games of a similar concept. Are there any other simulators you feel you’d like to try (like flying or *cough* goat)?
A. Project Cars is definitely on my radar but as of right now I’ve pretty much tried them all.
Q. Are there any upcoming horror games you’re itching to try, a la your Alien Isolation videos from about a month ago?
A. No, not at the moment. I like the horror genre but they stress me out too much. LOL.
