10. Michael Morhaime
Morhaime is the president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, known for games such as World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft. Blizzard’s huge success has largely been the doing of Michael Morhaime, who co-founded the company with Frank Pearce and Allen Adham. In 2008, Morhaime was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, and clearly deserves a spot among the most influential game creators.
9. Ralph Baer
We forgive you for not knowing who Ralph Baer is. If we told you he was the father of video games, would you be surprised? Ralph Baer is widely regarded as the creator of the very first gaming system, the Magnavox Odyssey. Without Baer this list wouldn’t exist, this YouTube channel wouldn’t exist, and I’d be without a job, so thanks Ralph. Unfortunately, Baer passed away last year. Rest in peace to the man who started it all.
8. Satoshi Tajiri
Tajiri is best known for making the worldwide phenomenon Pokémon. Pokémon is undoubtedly one of the biggest franchises in the world. It was all cultivated from the mind of Satoshi Tajiri. Born in Machida, Tokyo; Tajiri first began his career writing for his very own game site, Game Freak, which later undertook a transformation into game development. Aside from Pokémon, Tajiri also aided in the design of The Legend of Zelda and 1954’s Pulseman.
7. Hideo Kojima
Hideo Kojima is the creator of numerous highly-praised titles such as the Metal Gear series, Castlevania, and the recently pulled from PSN because of legal shenanigans scare ‘em up, P.T. (later revealed as Silent Hills). Kojima is one of the most influential game creators purely because of his desire to create high quality games, with a huge majority of his products being viewed as some of the best ever created. A lot of the people on this are innovators and inventors, Kojima is on this most influential game creators list for his ability to create great games.
6. David Jones
Jones is not hugely known, but he is still a major player in terms of video game development. He played a huge role in the cultivation of such games as Lemmings, the upcoming Crackdown 3, and the first game in one of the most famed and treasured video game franchises of all time, Grand Theft Auto. Jones recently formed his own studio, Cloudgine, who are working on the latest entry in the Crackdown series for Xbox One.
5. Eiji Aonuma
Aonuma’s first game development work was NES Open Tournament Golf, where he was a sprite designer. Around seven years later, he created what is widely known as the best game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Since then, Aonuma has been the producer of the majority of Zelda games including Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and the upcoming Tri Force Heroes. A true legend in gaming, and one of the most influential game creators of all time.
4. Will Wright
Will Wright is the co-founder of game development company Maxis, which is known for games such as The Sims, SimCity, and Spore. Wright is known for stating that he believes video games, specifically simulation games, can be used as a means of education and that computers can be used to extend the imagination. His spirit and high quality games are what places Wright so high on this most influential game creators list. The dedication he holds for his craft is almost unparalleled.
3. Sid Meier
Well known for the development of his Civilization and Pirates series, Meier is so well respected within the gaming community, that the development teams for his games are happy to have him plastered on their game titles (Sid Meier’s Pirates! or Sid Meier’s Civilization being the most notable).
Meier also acquired Take Two Interactive. Creating games such as Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, and BioShock, as well as acting as publisher for the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Meier continues to be a huge influence on a wide array of video games and shows no signs of slowing down yet.
2. Gabe Newell
Does this man even need an introduction? With a formidable cult following, Gabe Newell is definitely one of the most influential game creators of all time. Not only is he the mastermind behind Half Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2, but also the game distribution platform Steam.
Newell is also subject to a torrent of online jokes, giving him the title of the “Almighty Gaben” and “Gaben, Our Lord and Savior”. Despite the jokes, Newell is, and should be, regarded as one of the defining game curators of our time.
1. Shigeru Miyamoto
Shigeru Miyamoto is the boldest, most influential, and downright awesome game creators of our time. With games such as Pikmin, Zelda, and of course, Mario, under his belt, Miyamoto is one of, if not the best game creator of all time. His creations have spawned numerous sequels and each one has been a classic.
From Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy, to Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, Miyamoto is a legend in his own right. As a child, Miyamoto explored forestry and foliage around his house, giving him the inspiration for the Zelda series, which is a perfect example of how gaming was always flowing through his veins from the start. Undoubtedly, he is the person that has sculpted gaming the most.
